Disneynature was announced on April 21, 2008, a day before Earth Day, with a starting slate of seven films. Walt Disney was a driving force in combining a love of animals and education and incorporating them early on into his animated films and later into the Disney Parks.
Prior to the creation of Disneynature; Bambi (1942) featured forest life and was a hit. From 1948 through 1960, the company produced the True-Life Adventures series, which won several Academy Awards. Outside of film work, Disney parks were involved with one of the original opening attractions at Disneyland in 1955 with the World Famous Jungle Cruise and the addition of Disney’s Animal Kingdom at
Walt Disney World, making it possible for guests to experience animals first hand through a wide variety of mediums truly was a fulfillment of Walt’s dream when he said: “I have long felt that the way to keep children out of trouble is to keep them interested in things… ”

Dolphin Reef And Elephant
And just in time to help kick-off the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, Disney+ is introducing not one but two new movies to the Disneynature series featuring two unforgettable journeys with Disneynature’s Elephant, narrated by Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, and Disneynature’s Dolphin Reef, narrated by Natalie Portman, on April 3, only on Disney+ that showcase two incredible stories that showcase just how far family can take you.
“Elephant” follows African elephant Shani and her spirited son Jomo as their herd makes an epic journey hundreds of miles across the vast Kalahari Desert. Led by their great matriarch, Gaia, the family faces brutal heat, dwindling resources, and persistent predators, as they follow in their ancestor’s footsteps on a quest to reach a lush, green paradise.
“Dolphin Reef” dives under the sea to frolic with some of the planet’s most engaging animals: dolphins. Created with Disneynature’s signature storytelling style, the film introduces Echo, a young Pacific bottlenose dolphin who can’t quite decide if it’s time to grow up and take on new responsibilities. Dolphin society is tricky, and the coral reef that Echo and his family call home depend on all of its inhabitants to keep it healthy. But Echo has a tough time resisting the many adventures the ocean has to offer.
Please take a moment to appreciate our planet and the beauty all around us. From icy glaciers and desert plains to coral reefs and rainforests, this world is truly an incredible place. And thanks to Disneynature, we get a close-up look at some of the planet’s most magnificent species and their habitats.
