Fried Green Tomatoes at The Whistle Stop Cafe

Here in the South fried green tomatoes are a regular feature on the menu.  But in 1991 the world became aware of this delicacy when Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy and Mary Stuart Masterson brought Fannie Flagg’s novel, Fried Green Tomatoes, to the big screen!

The Whistle Stop Cafe

The Whistle Stop Cafe is just one of the places you will find those delicious Fried Green Tomatoes on the menu.  In the movie the Whistle Stop Cafe is located in Alabama, but the actual Whistle Stop Cafe, where a large portion of the movie was filmed, is located in Juliette, Georgia.

Juliette is only a short drive off of I-75, which is the main interstate running north and south through Georgia.  But the moment you arrive at the Whistle Stop you feel like you’ve stepped back in time!  The surrounding street and buildings harken back to a simpler time when everything you needed could be found on the main street of your small town.

As soon as you enter the cafe a friendly voice will direct you where to sit.  They don’t mind if you take a minute to look around before you place your order.  And of course the first course is easy to decide on – you simply have to try the fried green tomatoes!  And you will not be disappointed!  They are delicious and plentiful!  But don’t fill up on the appetizer!  Traditional southern dishes are all offered on the menu – fried chicken, pork chops, country fried steak and of course BBQ!  There are also salads and sandwiches available.  The cafe is open daily from 11 to 4.

We loved taking a break from the hustle and bustle of I-75 to walk along McCrackin Street and enjoy a great lunch at the Whistle Stop Cafe!  Be sure to take a look around the back and side of the cafe!  You’ll spot a couple of iconic reminders from the movie!  Several of the shops offer unique gifts and that’s also where you can pick up your souvenir T-shirts!

The Whistle Stop Cafe

The Whistle Stop Cafe is located at 443 McCrackin Street, Juliette Georgia 31046.  Your GPS should take you straight to the cafe!  It’s only a short drive from I-75 and well worth the time it takes!
