“I went to sleep with gum in my mouth and now there’s gum in my hair and when I got out of bed this morning I tripped on the skateboard and by mistake I dropped my sweater in the sink while the water was running and I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day…Some days are like that. Even in Australia.”
― Judith Viorst, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
It’s that time of year when life catches up with us and hits us like a ton of bricks. School has started which means early to bed and early to rise. Playtime is replaced by homework time and there’s the mad dash to get to soccer practice, marching band drill, football games, dance rehearsal, and painfully listening to the mandatory 45 minutes newly acquired trombone each night. If you’re not careful, you could very easily find yourself having a terrible, horrible no good, very bad day.
Now beloved children’s book “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” by Judith Viorst is making its way to the silver screen. Viorst confirmed that this endearing tale of everyday life was inspired by her own three sons’ childhood misadventures—Anthony, Nicholas and, most notably, her youngest, Alexander.
Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” follows the exploits of 11-year-old Alexander (Ed Oxenbould) as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life—a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his mom (Jennifer Garner), dad (Steve Carell), brother (Dylan Minnette) and sister (Kerris Dorsey) all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Anyone who says there is no such thing as a bad day just hasn’t had one-even if they live in Australia.
