Celebrate National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 17th

July is National Ice Cream Month and this Sunday is National Ice Cream Day, which probably explains why it is one of my favorite months of the year. If it were up to me, ice cream would have it’s own place on the food pyramid and it would be completely acceptable to eat a bowl of ice cream every day of the year.

This Sunday, July 17th, is National Ice Cream Day. So it is only fitting that we’ll be sharing ice cream recipes all week. Trust me, I’ll take ANY excuse to create and eat ice cream, like the White Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake No Churn Ice Cream.

Wondering how National Ice Cream Month came to be? Well we have Senator Walter D. Huddleston of Kentucky to thank for it. He sponsored a resolution to establish July 1984 as National Ice Cream Month, and July 15, 1984 as National Ice Cream Day. Yep, yet another reason to love my home state of Kentucky. The resolution was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1984. While the resolution only pertained to July 1984, the tradition has continued on ever since.

Today, over 87% of Americans have ice cream in their freezer at any given time. FYI, we always have ice cream in our freezer here at my house. California produces the most ice cream of any state in the United States. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, the average American consumes about 22 pounds of ice cream a year. I’m guessing I may have consumed that much last month, but after a while I quit keeping track.

Make sure to follow along this week as we share easy and delicious ice cream recipes and additional fun ice cream facts, all leading up to the big day on Sunday, July 17th, National Ice Cream Day.
