Aging Well With Anthem

When I think senior citizen, I think of my grandparents; the so-called elderly, those in retirement. But, the very last person I ever think of is me! And yet, according to the dates on the calendar, I have indeed joined the ranks of those deemed to be of that particular demographic, and at times that can be a bit on the terrifying side. Even though according to my birthday I am indeed a senior citizen, or as I like to term it, “vintage” or “an aged to perfection citizen”, really, at the end of the day, it’s how you go about your everyday life and how you engage and live it, that really determines who you are. 

Gone are the days of the kids around the house, and after 5 kids with the first one being born when I was 20 and the last at 40, kids around the house lasted more than a few decades, to say the least. I’m saying “hello” to the freedom of semi-retirement and ready to take on the world and all the adventures that are awaiting me.  Over the past year, I have had to say farewell to my daughter and my mom and then my dad but the lesson learned was that life is never promised no matter what our age. I’ve learned life is about living and taking advantage of all that it has to offer today.

My parents both led by example. They both continued to work full time, (my dad a doctor and my mom a volunteer at a performing arts center) and not once did it ever occur to them, even though they were both almost 90, to slow down. Instead, they lived their lives to the fullest each and every day, and that is a lesson I have taken to heart. One of the best ways to be able to do that is by not having to worry about health coverage. I want to face each and every day full out, seeking the next big adventure, finally checking items off my bucket list one by one.
